Introduction to my Placement

Schools Healthy Eating Programme

The placement I am undertaking with Preston City Council consists of a four week programme delivering healthy eating and cooking classes to primary schools around Preston. The classes were taught to key stage 2 students ranging from years four through to six. The general aims of the programme were to:
  • Ensure basic hygiene awareness
  • Teach and reinforce safe knife handling
  • Encourage fruit consumption
  • Raise awareness of where our food comes from
  • Teach basic home baking skills
  • Reinforce the importance of a 'healthy lunch box'
I had various reasons for wanting to do this placement, firstly I have developed a keen interest in nutrition over the past two years, it was also appealing to me as healthy eating is now becoming part of the national curriculum for schools. The fact that schools have to include programmes such as these into their class time could present opportunities for individuals to teach these sessions as a full time job, which is something I will be bearing in mind throughout my placement. In order to get this placement I was required to fill in an application form, followed by an informal interview with Preston's Senior Physical Activity Development Officer. I was then invited to the Town Hall to complete various certificates such as Health and Safety and The Data Protection Act. After receiving back my DBS form and completing a manual handling course, I was all set to commence on my work placement.
